Americans For Tax Reform

Millie Goebel

Grover Norquist, one of the pioneers of Americans For Tax Reform is striking pledge that 1,037 legislators, 14 Governors, 4 Lieutenant Governors, 5 Attorney Generals, 3 Secretaries of State, 3 Treasurers, 1 Auditor, and 1 Board of Equalization Member have all signed.

Below if the pledge that these public officials have signed.

 YOUR STATE

Taxpayer Protection Pledge

I, ____________, pledge to the taxpayers of the _____ District of the

State of _________ and to all the people of this state,

that I will oppose and vote against any and all efforts to increase taxes.

Here are two link to the site to explain more about the pledge, ways to donate, and how you can join their efforts!

See if your legislators have signed the pledge!

I stumbled upon the American Tax Reform pledge after a Professor of Criminology discussed Grover Norquist and his iron grip on the Republican Party. I did some more investigation to see how and who financed this group operations to uncover some interesting facts. The following two billionaire backed non-profits contribute a significant portion to ATR’s budget.

• The Center to Protect Patients Rights donated $4,189,000 to Americans for Tax Reform in 2010, 34 percent of the group’s budget that year.

• Crossroads GPS donated $4,000,000 to Americans for Tax Reform in 2010, 32.46 percentof the group’s budget that year.

The Center to Protect Patient Rights is led by billionaire duo the Koch Brothers who distribute grants to allied groups. Crossroads GPS is led by Karl Rove with known donors of Paul Singer and Steve Schwarzmen. Both hedge fund kings who benefit significantly from tax loopholes such as carried interest. All of these men play significant roles in campaign financing and funding groups such as Americans For Prosperity and Freedom Partners. Both groups giving significant contributions to more conservative leaning political action committees.

ATR is in my opinion one of the most vivid examples of dependency corruption. Norquist makes clear that those who sign the pledge and break it will not receive any donations from ATR’s donors as well as their network will retaliate with attack ads.

I wonder what Lawerence Lessig has to say about this pledge.
